Arthur’s little sister, D.W., has some great tips for any readers preparing to go to preschool for the first time. D.W. addresses some of the common fears children have when beginning preschool, like saying goodbye to their parents. The story highlights the positives of school, like a class pet, making friends and having a nice teacher. The pages are filled to the edges with fun and busy scenes; you can even make a game out of finding the Tibble twins on each page and seeing what kind of trouble they’re getting in to! The fun cartoon animals are drawn and water-colored with bright welcoming shades.

The story will show your child all the fun things they have to look forward to in preschool, like making friends and playing with new toys. D.W.’s class even has circle time where they all sing together. They also “plant seeds, make popcorn, make books, paint, play dress-up, or make stuff with clay.” Try to recall your own preschool days and suggest some of the other fun activities that may be offered. Perhaps there will be a show-and-tell time, or dress up time! Preschool isn’t only about playing though, some important lessons are taught. D.W. and her classmates learn their letters and numbers, how to be polite, and about sharing and taking turns.

My friend, Sam wasn't sure how to feel about beginning preschool. At first, he thought it sounded great, but when he learned his mom would not be staying with him, he was upset. I managed to get him excited by talking about the classroom pet (a hamster), his friend Avery would be there, and a whole new playground to check out at recess. D.W.’s enthusiasm in this book was also quite helpful. Sam actually asked if anyone like D.W. would be in his class. Perhaps this is Sam’s first crush?
